Roxburgh, Central Otago

Just 2 minutes away there are several cafes and a pleasant little town beside the Clutha River.

Could this be the town with the highest street width to vehicle traffic ratio in the country?

Roxburgh is at the heart of the scenic Teviot Valley, famous for producing a wide variety of delicious fruits - cherries, apricots, plums, nectarines, peaches, pears and apples.

In summer, fresh fruit, sauces, jams, pickles, juices, vegetables and plants can be purchased directly from the abundant roadside stalls.

Originally settled in the late 1800's the Roxburgh area developed with a strong Scottish heritage. Today the immediate area around the town has a population of around 1,200 with quality schooling and four churches.

The Roxburgh township is located on the banks of the mighty Clutha River which boasts some of the best salmon fishing in New Zealand. Surrounding lakes are well stocked with brown and rainbow trout and Lake Roxburgh is an ideal spot for watersports like kayaking, jetboating, water skiing and sailing.

There are numerous walking tracks and 4WD journeys that explore the river, the Teviot Valley, mountain ranges and Central Otago hinterland either side as well as old gold mining and other heritage sites.
